Finding the Perfect Pillow

If you’ve ever slept on the ‘wrong’ pillow, you know that your own ‘perfect pillow’ is essential for a restful night’s sleep. But what is the ‘perfect pillow’ for you? In our experience, there are three main factors that you should be aware of when choosing your pillow: Do you sleep on your back, side or front? How soft is your mattress? Do you prefer a firm pillow or a soft pillow?

When you sleep, your neck and shoulders should be supported, so you don’t wake up with a sore neck. Most people sleep on their side, so their ‘neck gap’ needs to be supported by the right pillow density.

An easy rule of thumb is, if you sleep on a soft mattress your body sinks lower down, so, you’ll need less neck support from your pillow. In which case, a softer pillow is ideal. Conversely, if your mattress is hard, your body is more elevated when you sleep, so you’ll need a firmer pillow to support your neck. In fact, the same rule applies if you sleep on your back or your front: the firmer your mattress, the firmer your pillow should be.

Of course, having said that, even if your mattress is hard, you may simply prefer a softer pillow. Or a hard pillow on a soft mattress. In the end, it really comes down to personal preference and what works best for you.
